Forensic chemistry is unique among the chemical sciences in that its research, practice, and presentation must meet the needs of both the scientific and the legal communities. A forensic chemist’s job is to assist in the ID of unknown materials found at a crime scene. He or she has a wide selection of analytical methods and scientific instruments to help identify unknown substances. It takes skill, art, and the science of comparison. If you are a fan of true-crime stories or mystery fiction, or are just curious about the science behind shows like CSI, this lecture promises to give you a great introduction to this exciting field.
